Online Science Workshop: Working with eBird Status and Trends Data Products

August 3, 2024
BOW Discovery Webinars

In May, 2023, we hosted a webinar that introduced basic concepts regarding Estimating Abundance and Trends for the World’s Birds using eBird data. During that webinar, many ornithologists were eager to take these concepts one step further so they could apply this to their own work. We are finally happy to oblige this October.

This special 3-part eBird Status and Trends Workshop is targeted for researchers and conservation practitioners who are familiar with using R. Each session of this 3-part workshop will build on material learned in the previous session. Please REGISTER SEPARATELY FOR EACH SESSION.

Description:

eBird has generated a database of over 1.8 billion bird observations with broad spatial and taxonomic coverage. The eBird Status and Trends project uses full annual cycle machine-learning models combining eBird data with remote-sensing data to account for variation in observer behavior and effort to produce high resolution estimates of range boundaries, occurrence rate, relative abundance, and population trends. Interactive maps displaying these results are available for nearly 2,500 species via the eBird website. The data behind these maps is available for download via the website or the ‘ebirdst’ R package.

In this series, attendees will be introduced to the range of data provided by the eBird Status and Trends Data Products as well as the suite of tools and online training material available for working with the data.

Through a series of live examples in the R programming language, attendees will learn how to download, analyze, and visualize these data products. The specific topics covered will depend on the interests of the attendees, however, potential topics include using the data for site selection, generating migration chronologies for a given region and species, and comparing the data products across multiple species. There will be time for attendees to ask questions about their own use cases and applications.

For more information:

Note: We recommend you familiarize yourself with the available data products in advance of the workshop, install the latest R package, and give some thought to your particular use cases.
