Systematics

Systematics History

Grallaria albigula Chapman, 1923, American Museum Novitates 86:8.—Santo Domingo [13°51′S, 69°41′W], 6,000 ft., southeast Peru. (7)

The holotype, an adult male collected by Harry Watkins on 14 September 1916, is held at the American Museum of Natural History, New York (AMNH 146167) (24).

Synonym

Grallaria albigula cinereiventris Olrog and F. Contino, 1970, Neotrópica 47:51.—El Jordan, 1,700 m [ca. 23°29′S, 64°57′W], Valle Grande, Cerro Calilegua, Jujuy, Argentina (21).—The holotype, an adult female collected by Francisco Contino on 8 September 1968, is held at the Museo de Ciencias Naturales, Fundación Miguel Lillo, Tucumán (FML 13388); the paratype, also an adult female taken at the same time, is held in the same collection (FML 13388b; see 4).

Geographic Variation

None definitely known, although see Subspecies.

Subspecies

Currently considered monotypic, but a second subspecies, cinereiventris, has been described but is not recognized by most taxonomic authorities (25, 26, 27, 28). It is described as differing from nominate albigula only by having the belly grayer (not white), and the flanks sepia-olive instead of gray (21). Known from very few specimens, its validity was questioned, albeit without direct examination of material pertaining to cinereiventris by Krabbe and Schulenberg (9). This taxon was maintained very tentatively, and with reservations, by Greeney (4).

Related Species

Molecular phylogenetic analyses show that the White-throated Antpitta appears to be a member of a large and diverse clade of Grallaria antpittas. In a comprehensive phylogeny that includes many Grallaria species that uses ultraconserved element (UCE) markers, Harvey et al. (29) found that the White-throated Antpitta was sister, with strong support, to a large clade that included Watkins's Antpitta (Grallaria watkinsi), Brown-banded Antpitta (Grallaria milleri), Cundinamarca Antpitta (Grallaria kaestneri), Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca), Tawny Antpitta (Grallaria quitensis), and White-bellied Antpitta (Grallaria hypoleuca), among others. Together with these species, the White-throated Antpitta was sister to both Pale-billed Antpitta (Grallaria carrikeri) and Chestnut-naped Antpitta (Grallaria nuchalis) (29).

Hybridization

There are no records of hybridization involving White-throated Antpitta.

Nomenclature

Apart from a somewhat controversial subspecies (cinereiventris, see Subspecies), nomenclature and taxonomy of White-throated Antpitta is fairly straightforward. For a summary of pertinent literature, see Scientific Names from the Literature.

Fossil History

Nothing known.
