Systematics History

Trogon roseigaster Vieillot, 1817, Nouveau dictionnaire d'histoire naturelle, Nouvelle édition 8 p. 314.—Type Locality: "Santo Domingo and Mexico".

The Hispaniolan Trogon has occasionally been placed in the monotypic genus Temnotrogon (16, 17), but is now generally placed in Priotelus with its sister species, the Cuban Trogon (Priotelus temnurus) (18, 19, 20).

Geographic Variation

None described.

Subspecies

Monotypic.

Related Species

The phylogenetic relationships of trogons including the genus Priotelus have been investigated by Espinosa de los Monteros (21) using sequence data from mitochondrial genes, by Moyle (22), Johansson and Ericson (23), Ornelas et al. (24), and Hosner et al. (25) using a combination of nuclear and mitochondrial genes, and by Oliveros et al. (26) using sequence data from thousands of ultraconserved elements. Those studies that included both Hispaniolan Trogon and the Cuban Trogon (Priotelus temnurus) have confirmed the sister relationship of those two species (22, 24, 25, 26).

The relationships of the genus Priotelus within the trogons differs among studies. Espinosa de los Monteros (21) identified Priotelus as sister genus to the remaining New World trogons (including the genera Trogon, Euptilotis, and Pharomachrus), which are together sister to the Asian trogons (Harpactes). In contrast, Moyle (22) found that Priotelus is near the base of the entire trogon radiation, and is sister to a clade that includes both New World (Trogon) and Old World (Harpactes, Apaloderma) genera, and Hosner et al. (25) found that Priotelus is sister to all other trogons. Still other studies found that Priotelus is most closely related to the Neotropical genus Trogon (23, 24, 26). Rapid early divergence of the major clades of trogon has likely lead to low phylogenetic signal when using relatively few genes, but in using extensive genome-wide data, strong support is achieved for placing Priotelus as the sister genus to the genus Trogon (26).

Hybridization

None known, and unlikely due to lack of close relatives in its range.

Fossil History

A single trogon fossil from the Pleistocene, presumably this species, is known from the Dominican Republic (27).
