Introduction

Scientific Names from the Literature

Anyone who has attempted to delve deeply into the vast ornithological literature, especially those works published from the 1700s to the early 1900s, is familiar with the confusing cloud of synonymies, misspellings, and shifting name usages (splits, lumps, etc) that surround most of the scientific names currently in use. Lamentably, few modern works have tackled the enormous task of compiling lists of these names and their synonymies, as they pertain to modern taxonomic arrangements, an oversight that has undoubtedly resulted in many key sources of information (i.e., nest descriptions), being overlooked. Thus, largely following traditional style and presentation, this list was assembled, for the most part, using the Catalogue of birds of the Americas series as the primary starting point. This series began in 1918 (with Part 2; 57), and was worked on over the course of more than three decades by Charles E. Hellmayr, Boardman Conover, and Charles B. Cory. Taxonomic names used within these works, and their numerous synonyms were followed, both forwards and backwards in the literature, aligning names with the currently accepted taxonomic arrangement within the present species account. Among many others, three additional publication series provided particularly important starting points: the Catalogue of the Birds in the British Museum (first part 1874; 58), Birds of North and Middle America (first part 1901; 59), and Check-list of Birds of the World (first part 1931; 60). Only works that were examined directly by H. F. Greeney are cited herein. For invaluable access to historical (and recently more modern) literature, the Biodiversity Heritage Library is the best place to start.

The following list of names from the literature provides not only an introduction to the literature treating White-throated Antpitta, but will also facilitate the correct matching of information with currently recognized taxa. It is as complete as possible, and will prove useful should the taxonomy of this species shift at some point in the future, allowing references and information to be correctly paired with the taxon to which they refer. Original taxon descriptions, of both currently recognized taxa and taxonomic synonymies, are followed by “descr.” Citations followed by “in part” are those where the name, as used, refers to more than one taxon, a practice widely employed in the older ornithological literature. The abbreviation “syn.” is used to denote works that mention the name in question only in the context of its status as a junior synonym.
