Similar species: Schrenck's Bittern (Ixobrychus eurhythmus).

Adult male Schrenck's Bittern is marginally larger and has bright chestnut-brown upperparts.

Similar species: Cinnamon Bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus).

Adult male Cinnamon Bittern has uniform rich cinnamon color.

Immature Yellow Bittern (Ixobrychus sinensis).

The juvenile plumage of Yellow Bittern is the most heavily streaked of similar bitterns.

Similar species: Schrenck's Bittern (Ixobrychus eurhythmus).

Adult female and immature Schrenck's Bitterns have pale spotting on dark underparts.

Similar species: Cinnamon Bittern (Ixobrychus cinnamomeus).

The immature Cinnamon Bittern is generally drab chestnut-brown with sandy-brown streaking and large spots of same color on wing coverts, white throat streaked dark brown, bright chestnut-brown flight feathers and tail, and chestnut-gray underwings.
