White-throated Antpitta
Possible confusion species: Red-and-white Antpitta (Grallaria erythroleuca)
In the limited range where the Red-and-white Antpitta and White-throated Antpitta overlap, the White-throated Antpitta can be separated by its olive-brown, not reddish-brown back, and gray, not white underparts.
Possible confusion species: Rufous-faced Antpitta (Grallaria erythrotis)
Within its limited range of overlap, the Rufous-faced Antpitta can be separated from the White-throated Antpitta by its dark crown that contrasts with its rufous face, as well as tawny-brown coloration on the breast.
Definitive Basic (Adult). Lateral view.
Crown, nape, and ear coverts are bright chestnut-rufous; orbital area whitish to whitish-blue, forming a distinct ring, broadest post-ocularly; lores and anterior malar grayish, dusky-white, or sometimes white slightly peppered with black.
Definitive Basic (Adult). Dorsal view.
Upperparts are olivaceous-brown, except the uppertail coverts and tail, which are more reddish brown; wings are similar to tail and have the primaries edged paler tawny-brown on the leading edge, especially basally.
First Formative (Subadult) Plumage
Note the orange at the base of the bill and the messy appearance of the lores and eyering.
Bird in its habitat; Cuzco [Cusco], Peru.
White-throated Antpitta usually remains concealed in dense vegetation.
