First record of the Speckle-fronted Weaver in Togo

I observed two adult Speckle-fronted Weavers (Sporopipes frontalis), perhaps a pair, near Tami, Savanes, northern Togo, on six different days between 29 September and 9 October 2016. There are apparently no previous records of the Speckle-fronted Weaver in Togo, but since it has been recorded in neighbouring areas of Benin, its possible presence in the northern region of the Savanes was already suggested (Cheke & Walsh 1996). The locality of Tami (10º51’N 0º03’E) is in the extreme north-west of the country, near its borders with Ghana and Burkina Faso. Habitats in the region comprise a mosaic of fields, ponds, wooded savannas and small woods. The birds were often seen at close range, while moving and resting in the bushes.
