Spur-winged Plover in Namibia

Country: Namibia
Section(s): vagrancy, Movements

On 4 December 2001 I observed a Spur-winged Plover (Vanellus spinosus) in Etosha National Park in Namibia. This species is a rare vagrant to southern Africa, from where there is only one other observation, in northern Botswana, in 1989, although the species has recently been discovered in both Malawi (since 1993) and northern Zambia (since 1999). The single I observed was among a flock of Blacksmith Plovers (V. armatus), resting near the waterhole at Okaukuejo Camp in the national park.
