Diet and Foraging

Introduction

Very little information.

Feeding

There are few published data on the feeding and foraging behaviors of the White-throated Antpitta. It is said to forage largely on, or near, the ground (9, 2), and presumably hunts by probing into the leaf litter and soil with its heavy bill, occasionally gleaning prey from low vegetation.

Diet

Insectivorous, but the diet is not described in any detail. Stomach contents (n = 2) included caterpillars (4.5 cm long, one each in both stomachs), spiders, roaches, and other unidentified insects (9, 2). Although earthworms are not known in their diet, the apparent prevalence of earthworms in the diets of other Grallaria (4), combined with the species’ largely terrestrial habits, suggests that earthworms are likely also a part of their diet.
