Demography and Populations
Introduction
The demography of the species is little known. For example, there is no information is available about the intervals between breeding for this species or the age of recruitment, as well as the population size and trends.
Measures of Breeding Activity
Age at First Breeding
Information is needed.
Intervals Between Breeding
Information is needed.
Clutch Size and Number of Clutches per Season
Between 2–4 eggs, but 4 egg clutches are regular (112; see also Breeding: Eggs). No information on the number of clutches per season.
Annual and Lifetime Reproductive Success
Information is needed.
Number of Broods Normally Reared per Season
Information is needed.
Proportion of Total Females that Rear ≥ One Brood to Nest-Leaving
Information is needed.
Life Span and Survivorship
Information is needed. However, BirdLife International (113) estimated a generation length of 6.7 years.
Disease and Body Parasites
Diseases
Information is needed.
Body Parasites
Endoparasites
The nematode Subulura huaynacapaci was reported in the small intestine of a Tawny-throated Dotterel collected in Trujillo, Perú (114). The helminth parasite Oxynema sp. was also described in this species (115).
Ectoparasites
Chewing lice, including Quadraceps ruficollis and Actornithophilus ochraceus were reported on birds sampled in Argentina and Chile (116, 117).
Causes of Mortality
Exposure
Information is needed.
Depredation
See Behavior: Predation.
Disease
Information is needed.
Direct Human Impacts
The Tawny-throated Dotterel was heavily hunted during their post-breeding migration in Chile and Argentina during the first half of the 1900s. Its numbers are thought to have declined considerably as a result (111, 18).
Population Spatial Metrics
Information is needed.
Population Status
Numbers
BirdLife International (113) estimated the global population as ranging between 670–6,700 mature individuals, although they considered the data quality poor.
Trends
The current trend is thought to be decreasing (113). In the past, Tawny-throated Dotterel populations declined strongly, at least in some areas, likely as a result of hunting (111, 20).
Population Regulation
Information is needed.
